0-1-6-7 Lesson 6 - 小轉 (Short Turns)

For many ambitious skiers short turns are the embodiment of skiing and the goal towards they strive. The evolution of the skiing technique, sparked by the Hughes profess made with regards to equipment, did not stop with short turns. The “technical” role model for the basic movement for short turns is still the “Beinspiel” technique, (skis are turned with the legs, the upper body is facing the fall line) which is soon to celebrate 50 years of worldwide application.

Shorter skis, particularly those with more side cut and which are evenly flexed, enable a better pressure build-up in the steering phase even for short turns. The steady edging and even weighting of the skis combined with the ski’s shape support the build-up of pressure. This pressure can be used to assist the legwork in initiating the new turn.

Exact timing is the basic for the pressure build-up. The skis turn as the legs rotate, the edging is caused by the skis turned onto their sides. In addition. The edging angle of the skis can be regulated by an inward movement of the lower legs. If correctly applied, this technique is very economical because less muscle power is needed to turn the skis.

Short turns call for excellent coordination as the movements-turning, edging and pole plant-must be very well timed. The skier also faces the challenge of simultaneously controlling his soeed.

Good, technically correct short turns form the basis for mogul skiing. And are also important for power-skiing, which requires even, rhythmical turns.

I would like to place special emphasis on the following three elements of the technique:
-The steady upper body
-The legwork
-The edging of the skis

Following are a few tips and tricks for each of these elements, will help you to correct the most common problems experienced with short turns. Shorter skis and a bit of perseverates success!
